Winter has settled in, and with it comes colder temperatures, more germs, and limited daylight that can interrupt our healthy habits. Don’t let your health take a back seat this season. Use these tips to help you stay healthy all winter long.
- Stay Active
The change in season might make it tempting to forgo your exercise routine and hibernate all season, but movement is beneficial all year. It can help manage weight, improve mental health, and boost your immune system. If you continue to exercise outside, be sure to dress for the weather and dress in layers. If you would rather stay inside this season, try workout apps at home or a new class at the gym. This is an excellent time of year to change your routine and try something different with exercise. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite activity!
- Eat Nutritiously
Eating nutritiously can maintain energy levels, manage weight, and fight illness. These three things are often at the top of our priority list during winter months. Incorporate fruits and veggies for a healthy dose of vitamins and nutrients. Choose seasonal varieties, such as squash and citrus. Or keep frozen varieties on hand for easy access. Also include nutrient-dense lean proteins and whole grains. Be aware of portions and practice mindful eating choices.
- Fight the Germs
Tis the season for spreading germs. Fight the spread by frequently and thoroughly washing your hands throughout the day. Limit touching your face and cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze. If you feel sick, stay home or seek medical attention when necessary.
- Hydrate
We might not think about an ice-cold glass of water very often in the winter, but staying hydrated is necessary year-round. Proper hydration keeps your immune system strong and fights away germs. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day as a reminder to stay hydrated. If cold water isn’t appealing in the winter, try sipping on warm water with a squeeze of lemon or decaffeinated, unsweetened tea.
- Sleep Well
Fewer daylight hours and a change in season can easily disrupt sleep schedules. However, sleep is a crucial component of staying healthy. It allows your body to rest and recover each night, giving you energy for the next day. Proper sleep is also needed to keep your immune system strong. Aim to stick to a sleep schedule. Incorporate a relaxing bedtime routine that encourages your body and mind to prepare for sleep. Limit caffeine, alcohol, or large meals that hinder restful sleep.
- Enjoy the Outdoors Safely
Time outdoors is beneficial for stress relief, sunlight, and exercise. The colder weather doesn’t have to keep you from going outside, but it is necessary to follow appropriate safety precautions. Know the weather forecast before going out, including the temperature and windchill. Dress warm and in layers. Cover your extremities to avoid cold injuries, and choose shoes with good traction. If you need to shovel snow, use proper form and take breaks whenever necessary. Frostbite and hypothermia1 are cold weather emergencies. Know the signs and symptoms of each so you can quickly identify them and seek immediate treatment.
Enjoy the season, and prioritize your health all year long.
